What is Reiki?

In simple terms, Reiki [Rei – Universal and Kei – vital life force energy] is an energy healing technique that helps to reduce physical pain, stress and anxiety by stimulating relaxation through the gentle touches of a practitioner. It is a beautiful healing tool that aids in balancing oneself physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

There are more than 30 different styles of reiki. However, Usui Reiki is regarded as the most popular form in modern times. It was taught and practiced by Mikao Usui in the 1990s and has no religious doctrine.

What to expect during a Reiki session?

Reiki is a non-invasive therapy. In a typical session, an individual lies in a comfortable possible in loosely fitted clothes, allowing the practitioner to gently touch the individual at 12- 15 specific points in the body. This stimulates the movement of vital energy to move through the practitioner to the client to support healing. Gentle sound healing through relaxation music also accompanies most sessions. A normal session lasts for 60 minutes, and no pressure or massage is applied on the body.

A Reiki practitioner is attuned to the highest frequency of universal energy and has the education and practice to be a medium of energy flow. It is a gentle tool and can be well explained with the help of Osmosis. The energy flows through the practitioner only if the client needs the universal energy to balance or fill his/her depletion. Reiki is not harmful and is believed to have no side effects. This significantly helps a client to sink into a stress-free zone.

Post sessions, clients are more relaxed and energetic. When a client says “thank you” after a session, practitioners are quick to remind them that they are just a channel. Thank the universe, they say. The relationship between a client and practitioner is open and pure; for the practitioner must understand the reason the client seeks a healing session and trust binds both the individuals.

During a session, clients may experience heat, tingling or pulsing through the practitioner’s gentle touch. It is normal. However, it is also normal not to experience any sensation. For every session, trust that the universe helps align and the practitioner is just a conduit.

The debilitating impact of COVID on mental well-being

Covid has left its mark across humanity. The past 2 years have been about losses – loss of a job, loss of family and friends, loss of freedom to travel wherever and whenever, loss of big gatherings to celebrate life. This list can go on – a big sense of vacuum has filled lives irrespective of gender, age, geographic boundaries or customs.

Reports on mental health across the world shows a sharp trajectory in the number of health issues linked to stress and anxiety. Society at large including health workers are falling into the dark vortex of depression and fatigue. Paranoia and knee jerk reactions from administrators across countries relating to Covid is continuing to create uncertainties around medium to long term planning for society at large.

The pandemic has changed the construct of our society significantly – we see more sadness, frustrations, anger, and disappointments around us. Significant events in life are put on hold.

While we want to believe that the worst is behind us, we need to acknowledge that times have changed. The world is now adjusting to a new normal in a Covid endemic world. Patterns of life have become unpredictable by and large. Once again humanity is taking baby steps to reconstruct life to the best of its ability.

How can Reiki bolster mental well-being?

In their practice, practitioners work with numerous clients who have reached out for availing sessions to reduce stress and anxiety. This also includes clients in the age group of 20s to 30s.

Alternate healing techniques have always been popular, but it is interesting and concerning at times to find the young generation reaching out to a beautiful non-invasive healing tool for peace and relaxation.

Circling back to Reiki, after every session, clients tend to be happier, lighter, and more relaxed. Some of them have started to access sessions more regularly than a year or two back. Why? The answer lies in a combination of how a Reiki session is conducted and the healing technique itself.

A Reiki session tends to start with a conversation with the client on the intentions to be set. This leads to a discussion on what issue a client wants to address and why. These conversations are therapeutic as all conversations occur in a safe space.

The session itself is very meditative mostly accompanied by soothing relaxation music. Post session, an enhanced sense of peace and wellness significantly reduces stress and anxiety. The energy blockages seem to melt away during a session.

What is long distance healing?

Reiki is an energy healing technique and transcends space and time. I always tell a client that he/ she must drop the skeptic garb to access or experience the distance healing. The practitioner uses powerful symbols to send long distance energy. Its potent and short and works as good as a in person session. Its energy play and one does not need the person to be around. A Reiki practitioner usually conducts a long-distance session by referring to a picture of the client and connects to the energetic essence of the person.   A session typically lasts for 15 minutes. As they say –love and healing can be felt oceans away.

Why should you consider Reiki as a treatment modality?

Over the years, more and more mental health professions in hospitals and hospices are seeking alternate holistic tools like Reiki to empower their clients. Reiki can work and does work as a complementary therapy to our existing medical treatments.

Every session of Reiki grounds a patient completely to experience less anxiety and get in touch with enhanced happiness and peace. In the longer term, this can translate to less depression or anger or anxiety by raising the immune system to deal with ailments and shocks. Reiki has helped increase the efficacy of treatments for chronic ailments, cancer treatments, anxiety and stress related disorder, insomnia and eczema. It is and will always be an alternative and supporting tool for the traditional medical treatments.

How can we maximise the benefits of a Reiki session?

During personal sessions, clients carry back a physical card holding the 5 principles of Reiki:

✓ Just for today, I  will not worry.
✓ Just for today, I will not be angry.
✓ Just for today, I will be grateful.
✓ Just for today, I will be honest.
✓ Just for today, I will be compassionate.

If we practice these principals, the beauty of life is bound to unfold.
